6 Things to Consider when shopping for your next Lipstick

Let's face it, we all have a drawer full of lipstick colors and we may even have a few favorite colors in mind when I mention your lipstick drawer. We love trying new colors and finding the perfect color to complete a look, that's why we keep buying lipstick! We thought about some things to consider when buying a new favorite to share with our beauties. Read on to find out some key factors to think about when shopping for lipstick!

Moisture Level

"Give me the lipstick that dries out my lips", Said no one ever. It's a good idea to read reviews on lipstick and product descriptions to find the moisture level you prefer. We personally love lips products with a little extra addition of hydration, like Lanolin Oil, Shea Butter, and other super hydrating ingredients. (All ingredients found in our glosses and lipsticks!) Moisture level in your lipstick plays heavily into how long it will wear before it soaks into your lips.

Warm Colors vs. Cool Colors

Its really important to have a general understanding of your skin's undertones. A neon orange may not be the best shade for you if you have a warm undertone. Experimentation is key to determining what works and what doesn't, so don't be afraid to try new colors (Check out our skin undertones guide here.)

How Will You Wear This Color?

Are you looking for a color to go with a particular outfit, or are you searching for a everyday color to go with multiple outfits? Try to visualize your closet or the color you would want to wear with the color. (Survey says get one of each for versatility)

Waterproof Vs. Non Waterproof?

Waterproof has become the new norm for most lip products, but there still are some waterproof options, especially when you're dealing with traditional lipsticks. Some people have problems removing waterproof lipstick which is why they prefer an easy to remove formula, but just as it comes off easy with water, it will also come off easy with drinking, eating, kissing or anything else involving your mouth.

Pro Tip: Remove waterproof lipstick easily with an oil based makeup remover or, in a pinch, baby oil.

Traditional Lipsticks Vs. Liquid Lipstick?

While the industry is going more towards liquid lipsticks, for their convenience and lack of melting, sometimes there is just something nostalgic and soothing about applying a traditional lipstick. One thing to consider when buying liquid lipstick is that traditional lipsticks usually run more true to color because they don't dry into the lips, so its important when buying a liquid lipstick to remember it will dry and may dry a little darker or lighter than the color it is in the bottle depending on the tone of your lips.

What Type of Finish do you want?

Matte has become the new go-to finish because it is buildable. You can add a gloss on top or blot it for additional effects. There are still other finishes available like satin, creamy, vinyl, sheer, glossy and iridescent which all provide their own look and feel. When shopping for a lipstick, pay attention to these words because they will tell you how the lipstick will look on your lips.
